LITHUANIAN UNESCO HERITAGE AND CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE EXHIBITED IN THE PRAGUE CASTLE
The historical Prague Castle will be the ground to the UNESCO World Heritage exhibition where Lithuania will present its cultural heritage and its natural wonders in an innovative and interactive installation titled “Lithuania in the Mail Parcel.” The exhibition, which is a part of the Prague Architecture Week 2013, will be open until Oct 20.
It is displayed in a form of curiosity cabinets, often called „Wunderkammer“ – a tradition dating to Renaissance. The Lithuanian exhibition has innovatively reemployed this method in a shape of 10 containers that offer a unique study of the objects included in the UNESCO World heritage list. Amongst them are the Vilnius Historic Center, the Curonian Spit, Kernavė Archeological Site, Struve Geodetic Arc points, Žuvintas Biosphare Reserve, as well as unique phenomena belonging to the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, such as Lithuanian Cross-crafting, Baltic Song and Dance Celebrations, polyphonic songs – “sutartinės,” and a documentation of the symbol of the late 80‘s revolution – the Baltic Way.
This year, Architecture Week is united under the theme of "Architectural Heritage and Contemporary Architecture," and takes place in the oldest preserved part of the Prague Castle, St. George basilica. The event is held under the auspices of the President of the Czech Republic Miloš Zeman. Every Tuesday, Prague Architecture Week invites hundreds of students to participate in its educational program.
In the modern architecture exposition, Lithuania is represented by the renowned Palekas ARCH Studio from Vilnius with their hugely successful Vilnius University Library project.
“Lithuania in the Mail Parcel” is included in the cultural program of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and was prepared by the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO under the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In the Czech Republic, it was organized by the Lithuanian Embassy in cooperation with the Prague Architecture Week. The exhibition will travel to the Brno Regional Museum later this year.
