Kaunas Bauhaus architecture showcased in Liberec
Oct. 20, the Technical University in Liberec was the ground to the opening of the exhibition that showcases interwar functionalist and Bauhaus architecture in Kaunas. The exhibition bears witness to an important period in Lithuanian history - this year its architectural heritage has been granted the European cultural heritage sign.
According to the authors of the exhibition, the beginning of 20th century was an opportunity that Kaunas used to become a unique point on the European continent – the modernist buildings bear witness to the fact. The Bauhaus architecture has established itself as the face of the city, and the resulting aura of optimism influences local architecture to this day.
“The opening of this exhibition symbolically marks the 25th anniversary of the Day of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence, because the achievements of today are largely to be thanked to the experience of the independent interwar period.” – said Edvilas Raudonikis, Ambassador of Lithuania to the Czech Republic.
Ambassador also welcomed the effort of the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Liberec Saulius Bazevičius for his initiative in organizing the exhibition and promoting Lithuanian culture, tourism and commercial cooperation opportunities in the region.
During the opening day over 80 guests visited the exhibition. Amongst them were the representatives of the municipality of Liberec, representatives of local businesses, members of academic and cultural community, students and members of Lithuanian community in the region.
The exhibition will be open at the Technical University of Liberec until November 8. The authors of the exhibition are the Kaunas architecture festival and architect Gintaras Balčytis. The exhibition has been organized by the Honorary Consul in Liberec Saulius Bazevičius in cooperation with the Embassy of Lithuania to the Czech Republic and the Technical University of Liberec.
