Kaunas and Brno strengthen ties in a chain of events

November 12th to 14th, Brno was visited by the Vice-mayor of Kaunas Simonas Kairys. On this occasion, and to mark the 25th anniversary of the Restoration of Lithuania‘s Independence, the exhibition “Architecture of Interwar Kaunas” was opened in Brno as well.

Brno, known for its Bauhaus architectural heritage and other modernist architectural examples, was the perfect location to exhibit the unique period from 1920 to 1940 when Kaunas was a temporary capital of Lithuania and became one of the modernist architectural centers in Europe.

The exhibition is showcased in a unique location in Brno – villa Stiassni – a monumental modernist architecture example. During the opening remarks the Ambassador of Lithuania to the Czech Republic Edvilas Raudonikis mentioned that the cultural event is also an invitation for the Brno citizens to come visit Lithuania and Kaunas.

The Vice-mayor of Kaunas Simonas Kairys shared that such meetings between the two cities are essential in strengthening cooperation. The author of the exhibition Gintaras Balčytis explained that the exhibition stresses the similarities between Kaunas and Brno and their place in the map of architectural heritage.

The event was recognized and attended by the Chairman of the Brno city’s Cultural Committee Karla Hofmannova.  Ainiai, a folk ensemble from Kaunas, was there to entertain the guests.

On November 13th, a number of significant meetings took place between Brno city representatives and the visiting delegation. Also, the city’s academic community had an opportunity to attend a lecture at the Technical University in Brno by the architect Gintaras Balčytis on the topic of Kaunas’ interwar architecture.

The exhibition will be open in villa Stiassni until December 13.
