EU Commissioner Andrius Kubilius Discusses Strengthening European Defense with Ambassadors in Prague
On June 12, the Embassy of Lithuania in Prague hosted a discussion today with European Commissioner for Defense and Space, Andrius Kubilius, attended by ambassadors of EU member states resident in Prague.
Welcoming the guests, Lithuanian Ambassador to the Czech Republic Rolandas Kačinskas highlighted the significance of a Lithuanian politician holding one of the EU’s strategic portfolios:
“Commissioner Kubilius’ insights on the future of European defense, the ‘Rearm Europe’ plan, and the ‘Readiness 2030’ initiative are especially relevant today, as security has become a top priority for both Lithuania and Europe as a whole.”
During the discussion, Commissioner Kubilius stressed the need to develop a European Defense Union in response to Russian aggression. He called on EU member states to strengthen support for Ukraine, utilize available EU borrowing mechanisms for defense spending, and implement joint defense industry projects both within the EU and with Ukraine. He underlined that Ukraine must be fully integrated into the future European security architecture.
Commissioner Kubilius also highlighted the link between his defense and space portfolios, noting that EU achievements in space could inspire enhanced European defense capabilities. “When we want to – we can be the strongest and invincible,” he stated.
The meeting at the Embassy took place on the sidelines of the 20th anniversary of the international GLOBSEC forum, currently underway in Prague.
