ENSEMBLE TRYS KETURIOSE PRESENTED LITHUANIAN MULTIPART SONGS IN THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
The pre-last weekend of August, on 23rd-24th, the Lithuanian folk ensemble Trys keturiose (Three in Four) presented a unique Lithuanian archaic polyphonic folk music genre – multipart songs, or sutartines – during the international Zlín Harvest Festival 2013 in the city of Kromeriz (Kroměříž). The music ensemble, led by musicologist and a folk expert Daiva Vyčinienė, upon the invitation of the festival organisers in the Czech Republic presented its program in a special concert, held under the auspices of the Lithuanian Embassy in the Czech Republic in Kromeriz Arcibishop’s Palace.
In Kromerziz, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, the Lithuanian multipart songs featured in the UNESCO intangible heritage events series. The festival presents such a series about national phenomena of the Czech Republic and other countries for the first time. In addition to the Lithuanian sutartines, this year it featured the Slovak instrument fujara, Indonesian dances, dance odzemek from the Valach region, kings’ ride, Slovacko regional dance verbunk. The ensemble from Lithuania also participated in the festival closing concert along with other presenters of UNESCO heritage list treasures on Saturday.
The Kromeriz House of Culture, an organiser of the seventh annual festival, which has become international since 2011, invites the adults and children to view not only musical performances, crafts fair, exhibitions, but has also organised the international symposium Intangible Heritage by UNESCO. It contained a special workshop on multipart songs with the leading member of the Trys keturiose Daiva Vyčinienė.
The visit of the Lithuanian folklorists was organised with an assistance of Dagmar Váňová, one of the alumni of the Lithuanian language studies at Charles University in Prague. She has also translated lyrics of songs and interpreted during the events of the Festival.
This event is one of numerous Lithuanian culture presentations in the Czech Republic this fall, while Lithuania is chairing to the Council of the European Union. For more information about the festival Zlín Harvest Festival 2013 find the attached programme (3.6 Mb).
