COMMEMORATIVE PLAQUE TO JONAS BASANAVIČIUS UNVEILED IN PRAGUE
Dec. 10, in Vinohrady, Balbínova street, in an opening ceremony the Ambassador of Lithuania Aurimas Taurantas and a Lithuanian scholar Vaidas Šeferis, who has traced Basanavičius‘s history in Prague, presented the memorial plaque to the attending audience.
Jonas Basanavičius (1851-1927) lived in Prague in the years 1882 to 1884. In Prague he wrote the first edition of the publication “Aušra” that instigated Lithuania‘s national movement. It is also the place where Basanavičius met his true love and wife Gabriella Eleonor Mohl.
The plaque was designed and crafted by Lithuanian sculptors Svajūnas Jurkus, Sergėjus Plotnikovas and architect Vladas Balsys.
Later that evening, in the New Town Hall of Prague, the opening of the commemorative plaque and the ending of the Lithuanian Presidency to the Council of the EU was marked by an official ceremony.
