CITY OF MĚLNÍK COMMEMORATES JAN PALACH AND ROMAS KALANTA
Jan. 16, the Mayor of the city of Mělník Ctirad Mikeš invited guests to commemorate Jan Palach and Romas Kalanta who sacrificed their lives in protest to the communist regimes in Czechoslovakia and Lithuania. Amongst the guests were the Chairman of the Czech Parliament Jan Hamáček, Vice-President of the Senate Alena Gajdůšková, as well as members of the diplomatic corps.
In his speech, the Lithuanian Ambassador to the Czech Republic Aurimas Taurantas shared his own personal experience bearing witness to the importance of public resistance of the 80’s and its role in paving the road to freedom of the entire region. After the memorial service, the Masaryk’s Cultural House of Mělník screened the documentary film by Raimundas Banionis and Andrius
Šiuša, “Fontano Vaikai.” Created in 1990, it depicts and examines the events surrounding Kalantas’ death.
